When I began my dream job of working for WQXI Radio right out of high school, I was beyond thrilled! I was willing to take on any job asked of me. (I talk more about this in my interview with Producer Rachel here.) I was hired as the station mascot, “The Quixie Quacker” so you could say I got my webbed foot in the door! I first encountered Kelly McCoy who worked on air at WQXI. We became fast friends and he began to show me (patiently I might add) the ropes of being on air. I learned a lot over the years and from working overnights to becoming full-time swing jock on WQXI. One winter night I received a call from Jim Morrison, the program director for WQXI-FM. He said our overnight jock was unable to get down her frozen driveway and did I want to go in and do the shift!! My nerves took over, but I got in my car and drove to the radio station. That began my FM career in radio! I worked every shift until I was asked to join the Steve and Vikki morning show in 1996 during the Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta. By that time, I had grown out of putting on a duck suit (but sill dream of being Tigger at Disney World!)
This is an article that Kelly McCoy wrote for his column in “Silver Streak”, a Rough Draft Atlanta publication.
