I Am Wall

During my many years at Star 94 FM,  I found my involvement at Children’s Healthcare one of the more enjoyable live broadcasts we did…raising money for the hospital.  But it was more than just raising money, it was seeing the smiles on the childrens faces, the healing love of the staff and familes who were blessed by knowing their child was receiving some of the best care available in the country.   During one of the radiothons my friend Stephen Wagner and I ventured to a floor that featured the “I AM WALL” showcasing letters from young children and their thoughts while in the hospital.  On this particular day, dressed in my doctor scrubs and doctor jacket,  I took a microphone and recorder to read some of the letters.  What transpired was more than I had imagined.  Our creative director Paul Bahr added music and the result is a manifestation of the children’s dreams and wishes which became the proudest moment thus far in my entire broadcasting career.  I hope you enjoy it.

Buckhead Church 100 Years

ChrisCauley

Today Andy wrapped his series on TIME and how we need to live knowing our days are numbered.  God knows that number and even though we perhaps think we have it all figured out, we really don’t!  “Under the Sun” was a phrase from the book of Ecclesiastes repeated about 29 times.  (Andy says you should not start reading this book until you’re much older because if you started with The book of Ecclesiastes you’d wana lay down on train tracks!) I now have better understanding that there is Eternity in our hearts, knowing to fear God and follow his commandments, and in dealing with time, priority determines capacity. As Andy prayed with us all,  the stage became illuminated in red lighting and shimmers of white.  A solo piano began to play the Five for Fighting song “100 years” and the man bringing the song to life was Chris Cauley Simply amazing talent. His soulful voice captured the emotional element of the song, drawing me in.  I reflected on Andy’s message over the past 5 weeks.  Listening to the lyrics “...there’s never a wish better than this, when you only got 100 years to live” brought it all home.  Live for today, right now and celebrate all your blessings.  Having just lost two wonderful friends this past week  reminded me that we need to be present in the moment and the true gift IS the present.  Be filled with love and gratitude and thank God right now.

Well my friends were going out of town and asked me to take care of their chickens and of course I said YES! I was briefed on the entire operation (open container of food and fill feeder) and then did my own research (googled) so I decided I was ready! I put on my bicycle helmet to not hit my head on the low hanging roof and off I went. Chickens are interesting! They tend to mess wherever and whenever. So watch where you step I say! Every day they would be gathered in a corner waiting for me to feed them. The closer I got to the chicken house the louder they got and when I sprinkled some of the $35 food on the ground they went crazy. Who knew corn pieces and meal could be so delightful. Sometimes they got a treat of an iceberg lettuce head. Strapped to a stick and away they peck. What fun! I thought after a few days you get out of em what you put in em so I went to Costco and bought a huge bag of ground flax to mix in with their food and sure enough, richer looking yolks in all the eggs. Oh yeah, the eggs–one of the main reasons I decided to take on this task of feeding chickens for almost 3 weeks. Every day was like an egg hunt. Most of the time the chickens laid the eggs in the hen house but sometimes they’d drop em under the house, in the corners of the yard and so on. While they ate lunch, I would sneak over and pluck out the eggs. Sometimes they’d look at me and have this sad expression on their face. I thought that maybe they were coming back to sit on them or something and how could I steal their eggs!!! Oh whatever, gotta eat you know! On average I got about 5-8 eggs a day. Scrambled, fried and omelets to start my day. I even started making french toast which I hadn’t had in years–YUM! I scrubbed their hen house roof, washed their water bottle a few times and even installed a bottle of hand sanitizer outside their door for all visitors. (don’t wana get the chickens sick.)  All of this reminded me of Boy Scouts and when my mom would “egg me on” to get those merit badges!! I don’t remember taking care of chickens as part of my Eagle Scout mission but if it were, I’d have aced that badge.  Scouts honor!

TIME in the workplace

AndyStanley

I am loving the series “Time” at Buckhead Church with senior pastor Andy Stanley.  This past Sunday was “take your boss to church day” and since I am my own boss, I took myself!  Trey and Marjorie Miller picked me up with their kids and off we went.  The church was packed and with many visitors (including bosses) who were experiencing Buckhead Church for the first time. Andy was “in his zone” as he delivered his message on Time injecting humor (as he often does) and bringing laughs throughout the entire church.   (It’s funny to say the word “church” when Buckhead Church is not what you might think of when you hear the word.    The worship band opened the service with a song from the rock group “Boston”.  Who needs coffee! )   The message for all bosses was “you can’t do it all yourself!“  Your strength’s further help a company grow and your weaknesses slow a company down.  Let others in your company help you and all involved shine!  This is a message that I wish so many of my previous bosses had heard and learned.  Towards the end of the message, Andy said I know a lot of the bosses are probably looking at their watch and thinking “when is this over” or you’re counting the lights in the ceiling (which I have done before but only because I am amazed at the lighting!)

Here is a checklist of what each of us (and bosses especially) can use to better not only our performance but make the best of our time.

  2. In what arenas do people consider you the “go to” person?
  3. What facets of your job energize you?
  4. What do you wish you could stop doing?
  5. What organizational environments are you drawn to?
  6. What environments do you avoid?

5 Foods that starve Cancer!

droz

Recently Dr. Oz reported on 5 foods that have been proven to starve Cancer. New groundbreaking research from The Angiogenesis Foundation proposes that you can stop cancer before it begins to grow. This new preventive approach is called anti-angiogenesis.  As complex as the name sounds, the foods are probably very familiar to you!

Certain foods, eaten in the correct portions and frequency, can provide cancer-starving benefits. Below are 5 foods to eat that can prevent cancer growth:

  1. Bok Choy This type of Chinese cabbage contains brassinin; a powerful cancer-fighter, also found in broccoli, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts. Bok Choy should be eaten 3 times a week, in 1/2 cup servings to obtain its full benefits.
  2. Cooked Tomatoes have more cancer-fighting properties than raw tomatoes. Both contain the molecule lycopene, but heating the tomato changes its chemical structure and makes the benefits more readily available to your body. You should eat 2-3 (1/2 cup) servings of cooked tomatoes a week.
  3. Flounder This fish is rich in omega-3 fatty acids and low in mercury. Three 6-ounce servings a week is ideal.
  4. Strawberries The antioxidants in this berry help fight cancers. You should eat 1 cup a day, including the juice.
  5. Artichokes contain 3 different cancer-fighting molecules. Enjoy ¼ cup of hearts per day.
